One of the reasons why vaping is so popular is because there are so many cool and interesting devices to get you excited about. New devices with the latest technical features, beautiful atomizers and coils that look like works of art, or a brand new premium e-liquid - these are the products that get a lot of attention from the community, but what about batteries ?
Of all the vaping accessories, batteries are the least considered. Experienced vapers who use mech mods and high-powered regulated machines pay attention to batteries, while casual vapers don’t pay much attention to what powers their devices. This is understandable, if you buy anything that runs on batteries, you’re only concerned about what size battery it needs. If your flashlight uses AA batteries, any AA battery will work.
Vape Batteries - More Attention Than Flashlights
Vape batteries are more complicated than flashlight batteries. Choosing the right battery for your device is important, choosing the wrong one can affect the performance or even damage the device. Unfortunately, it seems that most users are not aware of choosing the right battery for their vape device.
There are two main types of e-cigarette batteries : removable and built-in. Both have their pros and cons and are suitable for different types of vapers.
Built-in battery
The simplest power source for an e-cigarette is a device that combines a battery, circuitry, controls, and a burner connection all in one unit. As long as you charge it correctly, you should have no problems.
The simplest built-in batteries are the eGo or Evod. They are the main body of the vape pen with a pod. Originally they were charged by removing the pod and inserting one end of the charging cable into the connection, but today most vape pens have a USB charging port so users can charge them through it. Much more convenient and safer.
Vape pen batteries are easy to use and are a great choice for beginners. Of course, they do have some limitations. For example, they don’t allow you to adjust the wattage and they have a relatively low capacity. If you’re going to use a vape pen, it’s a good idea to buy two or three, so you always have one to use while the others are charging.
You can also buy more modern built-in battery devices, starting with compact devices like the SMOKTech, Innokin iTaste or Eleaf iJust and progressing to devices with multiple wattages and temperature control. These are suitable for experienced vapers, they can be used with any atomizer, while vape pens are only suitable for clearomizers .
Box mods with built-in batteries usually last longer than vape pens, you can use them for about a day. You can also charge them via USB while you vape. But if they die, it will take a while to recharge.
Removable battery
The choice for you with high customization is definitely a vape mod with a removable battery. When you go out, you just need to put an extra battery box and carry it with you, so if the battery is almost dead, you just need to replace it with a new one and you can continue vaping comfortably. You can use most of the features of the device without having to keep it next to the charging port.
However, using a removable battery means you have to choose the right type. A few years ago, vape mods used lithium ion batteries in a variety of sizes, but now companies have settled on the standard battery size of 18650. They look like oversized AA batteries, have a voltage of around 4.2V when full, and a pair of 18650s is enough to last the average vaper a day.
Using 18650 batteries is really convenient, but you also need to know a few things about them. 18650 batteries look like a larger version of AA batteries, but much more complicated. They contain more power. And you can't just randomly pick one and put it in your device. AA batteries are usually placed in any device, but choosing the wrong 18650 battery can damage your device.
Make the right choice
First, don't use a mech mod unless you understand ohm's law and battery safety, otherwise the mech mod will become a mini bomb that can explode at any time.
With regulated mods, mods with screens and adjustment buttons, they usually have quite high power, you should use them with batteries with a current intensity above 25A.
If you are using more than one battery, then choose a pair of batteries. This means choosing a pair that is mostly identical in rating - never a mismatched pair like one old and one new - and only use that pair of batteries in the box you choose.
While vape batteries may not seem as exciting as devices and atomizers, they are still something you absolutely should not be too stingy with when investing in. Cheap batteries of unknown origin will not work well and are not guaranteed to be safe, there is no guarantee that they will work as printed on the label. Remember to always buy batteries from reputable stores and choose batteries from brands that have guaranteed quality such as Sony, Samsung, Panasonic or LG.
