Have you ever noticed that you tend to read more bad vaping articles online than good ones? When a group of Australian researchers published a report that e-cigarettes could cause asthma in children, the article went viral within hours. But when people like Dr. Michael Siegel come out in support of vaping, his comments are often ignored by the online media. It seems like the only doctor who gets any attention is Dr. Drew Pinsky of MTV fame.
Dr. Drew is not exactly a world-class physician, but there are a number of highly regarded physicians in the world who openly support and promote e-cigarettes as an effective and safe way to quit smoking. Here are some of those respected doctors who deserve to be recognized.
Dr. Michael Siegel of Boston University School of Public Health
Having worked in public health and tobacco harm reduction for twenty-five years, Dr. Michael Siegel is one of the medical community’s most visible advocates for vaping. Before becoming a vaping advocate, he prioritized smoke-free workplaces and Big Tobacco’s advertising. Today, Siegel often criticizes the public health media for misleading the public with half-baked studies and conspiracy theories.
“This is an important effort that could save countless lives. I find it ironic that while anti-tobacco groups promote nicotine replacement therapy with pharmaceutical products that are not very effective, they ban nicotine replacement therapy with e-cigarettes that are much more effective.”
Dr. Konstantinos Farsalinos of the Onassis Cardiovascular Surgery Center in Athens, Greece
As a world-class cardiologist, Dr. Konstantinos Farsalinos is a regular on television news, including in the United States. Every time a study is published that addresses the “danger of vaping” myths, Dr. Farsalinos takes to the Twitterverse to point out the flaws and errors in the study.
If you read an article about a new, unknown scientist claiming to have new evidence of vaping-related illness, read Dr. Farsalinos’ tweet. He probably wrote a full argument to refute the article and tell the public about its flaws.
“I think most people who are negative about e-cigarettes don’t really have a lot of knowledge about the product. If you’re going to give your opinion about e-cigarettes to the public, you should at least know what you’re talking about, because what we say as scientists can affect a lot of people.”
Professor Riccardo Polosa, University of Catania, Center for Tobacco Research
Professor Polosa is the lead author of numerous studies related to tobacco harm reduction, nicotine addiction and smoking-related respiratory problems. In 2013, he conducted a global survey of nearly 20,000 vapers, which was considered a major breakthrough by the scientific research community.
He is also noted for his research on e-cigarettes and their effectiveness in helping smokers quit. Professor Polosa has not only demonstrated that e-cigarettes are safe and effective, but his research has also shown that smokers who use vapes have a 2:1 quit rate even though they had no intention of quitting.
“For smokers, the only two options are quitting or dying. But now they have a third option: switching to e-cigarettes. Using e-cigarettes allows smokers to access nicotine from a safer source.”
These are just a few of the leading medical professionals who have embraced vaping as a safe and effective alternative to smoking. Others include Dr Murray Laugese of New Zealand, Professor Jean François Etter of the University of Geneva and Professor Linda Bauld of the University of Stirling. The vaping community knows and celebrates these dedicated medical professionals.
