Many people don’t pay much attention to celebrities, but they play a big role in setting trends. Here are six stars who have brought e-cigarettes to the public eye.
If the glamour of old Hollywood was defined by the thick clouds of smoke that hung over VIP gatherings, then we're definitely in the golden age.
Whether it’s backstage at the BAFTAs, on the red carpet at the Oscars or over champagne and nibbles at the Golden Globes, smoking is glamorous again. Only it’s not smoking cigarettes anymore, it’s vaping , the name given to the use of electronic cigarettes. And the thick clouds of smoke we see hovering over the heads of celebrities aren’t the pungent smoke of cigarettes, but the fragrant vapor of e-cigarettes.
Over the past two or three years, vaping has become more mainstream as a number of celebrities have been spotted using some form of e-cigarette when out and about. From famous smokers like Jack Nicholson and John Cusack to surprising smokers like Katy Perry and even Britney Spears, everyone has used e-cigarettes.
E-cigarettes work by heating a small amount of liquid to create a stream of vapor. As soon as the user places the e-cigarette tip in their mouth and begins to inhale, nicotine is introduced into the body and creates a vapor, similar to the feeling of smoking a regular cigarette. With a variety of e-cigarette kits and e-liquids in different flavors from many manufacturers, vapers can change the consistency and taste of their vapor, from high nicotine for those who have just switched from regular cigarettes to e-cigarettes, to no nicotine at all for those who want to quit smoking completely.
The top vapers today are:
Leonardo DiCaprio: He's arguably the biggest fan of e-cigarettes, with his vaping habits at some of the most glamorous awards shows on the planet. But, The Revenant star was asked by organizers to leave his e-cigarette device outside at the 2016 Academy Awards. The request was made following a complaint from the ALA (American Lung Association) after DiCaprio was seen vaping at the 2016 Screen Actors Guild Awards.
Lily Allen: Allen is not only an active vaper, she is also a pioneer in the e-cigarette movement. In the music video for her song Hard out here, there is a scene where dancers are seen using e-cigarettes.
Kate Moss: The supermodel has been so committed to her healthy smoke-free lifestyle that in 2013 she paid £2,000 for an assistant to fly her from London to Formentera in Spain and back with her favourite e-cigarette.
Michael Fassbender: The actor who plays Macbeth is another celebrity who loves to vape, he was seen vaping at the 2016 BAFTAs.
Stephen Dorff: The Blade star has become the face of several ads for an e-cigarette brand.
Bruno Mars: Following a promise to his mother who died of a brain aneurysm, the British singer stopped smoking and switched to e-cigarettes. And he liked them so much that he invested in an e-cigarette manufacturer.
