Vaping with "homemade" coils: No big deal!

Is it easy or difficult to build your own coil?

You know, in the past, there was a time when each vape shop was dozens of kilometers apart, not as common as it is now. Sometimes a whole district or even a whole city had a decent vape shop , with builders good enough to “modify” your vape.

The most popular type of vape nearly a decade ago was the mech mod combined withthe RDA - a device that required careful and constant care. Hearing this, you can probably imagine the constant worry of vapers 10 years ago: Every time you build a coil, it's like Tam Tang going to get the sutras, so far away!

Perhaps that is why every vaper back then had the ability to make their own coils, to “craft” handmade coils from raw materials ordered from abroad. This movement quickly spread in the community as more and more people realized the advantages of making their own coils at home.

Make your own coil to "tame" vape

The first and most obvious benefit is that your taste perception will be “unlocked” to a new level. Because when you make your own coil, you have to really focus on the experience that the coil brings.

Is it sweet enough? Is the aftertaste deep enough? How to fix it? How to mix ingredients to get more beneficial properties? And dozens of other questions will continuously appear in the process of learning how to "tame" your vape. Once you have answered those questions, anyone will become a master builder.

Each setup formula, each type of coil has different advantages that we can use depending on the smoking style, the type of essential oil we like. For example, Nichrome material (Ni80) has the characteristics of heating up quickly/cooling down quickly, durable with temperature or chemical changes, so it is often used for playing with smoke, you can "spam" continuously without fear of the coil made from Ni80 overheating or rusting.

Meanwhile, Kanthal A1 material has the properties of heat preservation, slow cooling and longer heating time, so it is often used to smoke fatty cakes, slow MTL smoking to feel every smallest flavor in the vape vapor.

Building coils is not as difficult as you think!

In this article, The Vape Club will help you prepare all the steps to make your own handmade coil. Let's start making a really standard coil!

The type of coil that TVC wants to introduce today is the clapton coil - the simplest custom coil to start practicing running wire. Every great person starts from very low and a good builder is no exception. Mastering the technique of running clapton coil is just like Da Vinci learning to draw eggs. Once you have mastered this most basic type of coil, all other types of coils, no matter how "striped" they are, are small matters.

Steps to make your own coil:

Prepare ingredients

To make your own coil at home, you need to have all the necessary materials and tools. These include:

  • One coil of core wire (26ga or 28ga size), material optional.

  • One coil of wire (36ga or 38ga size), Ni80 material.

  • Small hand drill, the machine does not need to be fast but needs to run smoothly.

  • Table clamp vise to fix core wire when running.

  • Anti-twist coil, this is the most important thing because without a good set of coil locks, even an experienced builder can easily damage the coil.

Run the wire

Step 1: Prepare a piece of Kanthal A1 or Ni80 core wire about 30cm long, it is best to start with size 26ga. Bend one end of the wire 90 degrees and fix one end of the wire to the drill, the other end is connected to the anti-twist nut and clamped to the vise.

Step 2: Straighten the wire by using pliers to tightly grip the end of the wire at the locking end, pull it tight and turn on the drill at a slow speed so that the wire twists itself and becomes straighter.

Step 3: After fixing and straightening the core wire, we will move on to fixing the cover wire. You can hook the cover wire to the horizontal fold of the core wire at the top of the drill (in step 1).

Step 4: Hold the drill with one hand so that the core wire is taut. Next, run the first few rounds very slowly so that the wire is evenly wrapped, tight and firmly "grips" into the core inside. Once you are confident and have mastered the rhythm, you can speed up the drill and complete the wire section faster.

The key to running a successful coil is to keep the core wire taut and straight, and the wrap wire square and at the right tension. Too much tension will cause the wrap wire to break, while too much slack will cause the wrap wire to loosen and slip off the core. Both situations force the builder to start from scratch.

Although this is the easiest type of coil to make, trust me, no one succeeds on the first try! Be confident, correct your mistakes, and start over. As we have affirmed above, once you have mastered the clapton coil, conquering the alien or staggered coil is just a matter of time!
