The Hollywood tabloids you read while waiting in line at the grocery store are filled with stories about celebrities getting coffee, shopping at Costco, or casually strolling around town with no makeup on. These seemingly mundane details allow fans to see a normal side of A-listers, and feel like they’re sharing in a simple part of it.
And now, you can add vaping to that normal life. As all vaping enthusiasts know, the world has dedicated a number of articles to celebrities who use vapes, thanks to movie superstar Leonardo Dicaprio who pioneered this trend.
When did Leonardo vape?
Leo has been a big fan of vaping since the industry started booming. But it wasn’t until e-cigarettes became popular that he finally threw down the gauntlet and went all-in. He was vaping at Rao’s, one of New York’s most upscale restaurants, without paying attention to the reactions of those around him.
Before that, Leonardo and his green-lit cig-a-like were rarely seen apart, both of them always in the frame of any photographer. In restaurants, even when riding a bike... Leo vaped whenever, wherever he wanted.
Only then did other celebrities start to follow Leo's lead, and one could say they followed the trend in droves.
"Locomotive" of New York
A few years ago, when the eGo vape pen started to appear on the vape market , Leonardo was once again at the forefront of the new technology trend. At that time, when most Hollywood smokers were just starting to use cig-a-likes, Leo immediately ditched his familiar cig-a-like to switch to a multi-wattage vape pen combo with a clearomizer .
Of course, this hasn’t changed his vaping habits. Leonardo vapes are as common a sight in Hollywood as fancy cars and puppies in his wallet. He’s often seen blowing smoke all over the red carpets he attends, bringing a once-rare habit straight to international television.
Not only have fans seen Leonardo vaping since the years he started, but they've also noticed him constantly using the latest, most cutting-edge devices, highlighting the evolution of the industry.
In fact, Dicaprio was so protective of his vape pen that he wouldn't let his co-star Miley Cyrus touch it at a Saturday Night Live afterparty — something Miley later told Jimmy Fallon.
Habit of playing smoke everywhere
In 2016, celebrity vaping was as newsworthy as the KISS tour, creating a very exciting time for vaping. Stars like Katy Perry, Sarah Silverman, and Johnny Depp were showing off their vape pens to anyone who asked (though what was in their clearomizers remains a mystery). Has Hollywood finally set the standard for vaping devices ?
No. Just look at Leo.
At the 2016 Screen Actors Guild Awards, Leo stole camera time from many of the winners with his trendy vape kit. Maybe his habit was a little bad, but no one nearby seemed to mind the cloud of smoke that hovered around him all night.
Within seconds of his internationally televised smoke-blowing stunt, social media and tabloids were all over the story, leading doctors, mothers, and other show organizers to speak out. The Oscars producers immediately issued a statement asking Leo not to vape on their show.
Despite some of this negativity, Leonardo persisted in making vaping a top priority, which helped greatly in the eventual acceptance of vaping.
Starting in Hollywood
Vaping has become so popular that even image-conscious A-listers no longer feel the need to host their own gatherings or hide out at public events. Even famous smokers like Jack Nicholson and Simon Cowell have successfully switched from cigarettes to e-cigarettes , praising them as a safe and affordable alternative.
Part of the credit for this is Leonardo DiCaprio, who successfully quit smoking thanks to vaping. While he may not have called himself a pioneer of vaping in Hollywood, there have been plenty of celebrities who have started using cig-a-likes, vape pens, and vape mods since Leo first brought them to the big screen a decade ago.
