Thailand: Facing 10 years in prison for using e-cigarettes

A tourism agency is urging people to remind tourists not to vape in Thailand, as they could face up to 10 years in prison.

Pat Waterton, manager of Langley Travel, said she had no idea there was a ban. She only found out about it recently when her son James was ordered to pay a £125 on-the-spot fine after being threatened with jail for using an e-cigarette in Bangkok.

“If I were to tour to Thailand, I would definitely warn passengers. All companies should,” Ms Waterton told Travel Weekly. “Thailand is a popular tourist destination, so we make sure we inform all passengers about any behaviour that could ruin their holiday here.”

In November 2014, Thailand passed a law banning the importation of e-cigarettes into the country. This law has since been extended to the exportation and sale of e-cigarettes . While it may seem normal for people to vape in Thailand, they are actually breaking the law, as possession of e-cigarettes is already illegal.

The Foreign Office has issued clear advice. It has posted a notice on its website asking tourists not to bring vaping devices and replacements into Thailand. “These items may be confiscated and passengers could face a fine or up to ten years in prison if convicted,” the Foreign Office said.

“The sale or possession of e-cigarettes and similar devices is also banned and you could face a hefty fine or five years in prison if caught. Several British tourists have been caught with vaping devices in their luggage.”

Kuoni, a UK tour operator that handles trips to Thailand, has advised passengers to check with the foreign office before travelling. A Kuoni spokesman said: “We encourage customers to visit the FCO ( Foreign and Commonwealth Office ) website for advice on overseas travel before booking.”

“Travelers can find travel tips on our website and personal travel experts can guide customers in preparing their holiday plans, including advice on a specific country, safety and security, entry requirements, travel and health warnings.”
