Learn about vape coils and atomizers

What is a burner?

Atomizers are defined as any device that can vaporize liquid. Recently, it has become a term closely associated with vaping . It may sound confusing, but it is basically just a coil made of resistive wire that is heated to create vapor from e-liquid .

Atomizers, also known as vape coils, come in a variety of styles from disposable to custom-built coils. Atomizers – specifically coils – are measured in ohms based on the resistance they carry. The lower the resistance, the higher the wattage required.

The word “atomizer” is used a lot with different definitions that can be confusing. It can refer to the coil or the device that holds it like a sub ohm tank or RDA commonly used in vaping.

Vape coils can be made from a variety of wire types such as kanthal, SS, nickel, and titanium. The atomizer requires a wick to be used to infuse the vape coil with e-liquid. When you turn on the device, the coil heats up and turns the e-liquid into warm, aromatic vapor.

Some atomizers are also made from materials like ceramic. Other materials that can be used to wick vape coils include SS mesh, silica, or ekowool. Now let’s take a look at the two main types of atomizers so you can choose the one that’s right for you.

Pre-made coils and burners

Rolling your own coils isn’t difficult, but it’s not a requirement for a vaper. Many high-end devices still use pre-made coils. These are called coil heads, and are designed specifically for a particular device and can last for about a week.

Each coil head has a different resistance rating and requires a certain amount of power. Sometimes some tanks have multiple coil heads with different resistance ratings, making ordering difficult.

For example, the Kanger Toptank has nearly a dozen coil heads just for it.

Some coils are designed for high wattage vaping, others for low wattage or TC mode. Different vape coils will have different effects on each vape session.

If you like to vape at low wattages, then you should use a high resistance coil. Low resistance coils require more wattage and can produce more vapor. Sub ohm coils have a resistance lower than 1.0 ohm.

Advantage:

- Convenient and easy to use

- Designed specifically for your device

Disadvantages:

- Add a part of the cost

- Unable to reinstall the wick

- Only usable for one week

- Difficult to change taste

Rebuildable atomizers

Rebuildable atomizers require you to build your own coils to use. This is not easy and is not for the novice vaper. However, once you get the hang of rolling your own coils, the possibilities are endless. You can create a unique coil pair to suit your vaping needs.

Rolling your own coils gives you the added advantage of being able to change the wicks if you want. You can also clean the coils and remove any residual flavor from the old e-liquid so you’re ready to switch to a new flavor.

1. RDA

This type of device requires you to roll the coil yourself and inhale the vapor it produces directly by simply dropping a small drop of e-liquid onto the coil. This type of atomizer produces the strongest flavor of e-liquid and can sometimes produce very strong smoke. RDA is easy to build coils, you can roll coils for your RDA yourself after a few practice sessions.

2. RTA

Nowadays we have many types of rebuildable atomizers, and the most notable is the RTA . This type of atomizer is similar to the RDA in that you will have to roll the coil yourself to use it, it is more convenient than the RDA in that there is a tank below that continuously supplies essential oil to the coil to flavor and create smoke.

Advantage:

- Can replace the wick

- Good taste

- Good smoke

- Customizable

Disadvantages:

- Requires skill and effort

- Time consuming

- May cause leakage and throat irritation if the wick is not installed properly.

Conclude

By now, you probably know what an atomizer is and have a basic understanding of how they work. You don’t have to be a professional coil builder to vape, and you can absolutely find satisfaction with pre-made coils.

The term atomizer has been so overused that even professional vapers sometimes don’t know what it stands for. One thing is for sure, the atomizer is the vapor-producing device whether it’s an RDA or RTA, and the vape coil is the part that gets heated inside.

Both are called burners, but now at least you know the difference.
